While there are many natural disasters that could possibly strike at any moment, some are more likely to happen where you live than others are. If you want to be prepared for a natural disaster, determine which disaster for which you need to be the most prepared. Then you will be more familiar with the exact steps you should take for disaster survival tips.

You will want to provide a way for your family to have safe drinking water and food. In addition you will need to have contact with the outside world. You will need plenty of clothing and bedding. You will also need access to a basic first aid kit.
If it is likely that the outside water supply will be contaminated, you can have provision for your family by filling the bathtub with clean water before the disaster hits. In addition, you can purchase bladder bags that fit into the tub and hold one hundred gallons of water. That is enough for a family of four for five days. You will want to work hard to preserve your water. This can mean saving gray water from hand and dish washing to use for toilet flushing.
You will also need food that can be kept safe without refrigeration. Consume food in the refrigerator first. Keep doors closed as much as possible. Frozen food is safe as long as it still has ice crystals in the food. If you do not have power for an electric stove or gas for a gas stove use your camping gear or barbecue grill to cook food. Do not bring this equipment inside the house to cook as it can create a dangerous situation.
Many times during disasters, phone lines may be down. If they are working, then you may not have power. You are more likely to be able to use a land line if you have a corded phone rather than a cordless. The cordless phone requires both power and phone to be connected. The corded phone only requires that the phone line be live. Cell phones are often more reliable as they do not require wires as long as they are charged. You may want to purchase one of the emergency cell phone charging kits that are available.
You will want to have a battery operated radio and flashlight as well as back up batteries. The radio will allow you to receive warnings and directions. The flashlight will allow you to see after dark. You may want to consider the newer rechargeable flashlights that have a built in radio and can be charged by using a hand crank. Some of these flashlights also have the option of charging a cell phone.
When you are evacuated, be sure that you grab a change of clothing for each family member. In addition be sure that you grab sleeping bags or blankets for each family member to use. You may not be able to return to your home for several days, so be sure that you have things that will keep you as comfortable as possible.
